I tried getting to the recovery page (mashing F9 at startup) to perform ASUS EEE PC restore factory settings in Windows, but it didn't have an option for ASUS recovery. It only went to a windows fix and repair section. When I tried to do windows recovery, there were no images found.
In this case, you can choose to clean install ASUS EEE PC with Reset this PC or installation disc. As you may know, a clean install will delete everything on the computer, but that is what users don't want to see. Thus, it's a wise choice to restore system image to new hard drive for disaster recovery or troubleshooting.
You could consider using a reliable one key recovery software - AOMEI OneKey Recovery, which can help you create a system image in simple clicks. Compared with traditional one key recovery software, it's more flexible and allows you to schedule backups in daily, weekly, monthly. In addition, it allows you to enable F11 or A key as well as boot menu to quickly access this software. Once something bad happens, you can use this system image to get your computer back. Follow the steps below.
This article shows you how to restore EEE PC Notebook to factory settings, you can choose to use ASUS system recovery or a reliable one key recovery software - AOMEI OneKey Recovery. The first method will delete everything on the PC and sometimes you may be bothered by the ASUS EEE pc factory restore F9 not working issue.
Instead of the tutorial below for the 701, you can simply download the latest EeeePC ISO 1.7 (1.9GB), e.g. EeePC_1.7-2009-04-14_17-58.iso from here and add it to your Easy2Boot multiboot USB drive. You can either run it as a Live OS or install from it. The following Eee PC models are included in v1.7:
Ive noticed it has 2 "special" partitions: a 10Gb Fat32 RESTORE hidden partition (used by BIOS "F9 recovery" feature) and a 16Mb "unknown" partition at the end of the drive (used by BIOS "Boot Booster" feature).
Know this is an older post but pointed me in the right direction for understanding better the partitioning on an unmodified original 1005HA-PU17. It has OEM C: & D: drives, recovery partition and Boot Booster partition. All are functional. Another posting showed me how to unhide the hidden recovery partition to copy the restore files to the D:, the .WIM images files, etc. Then change the "type" back to OEM hidden, then rebooted, F9, recovery again operational. Took two snapshots showing additional info of the hidden partitions and uploading since this data is basically impossible to find.
Partition is now ready for the EG_BB software installation downloaded from ASUS site. Extract and install the software. Reboot, Go into BIOS and Enable EG_BB options in BIOS, save and exit. Let it boot up fully into Windows, then shut down PC. Press left EG button and software should load. Do the first initial setup screens, PC does a reboot then is now EG ready to run with any additional configs as needed.
Easy Recovery Essentials can fix many errors such as this automatically using its built-in Automated Repair option. EasyRE is currently available for Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8 and can be downloaded and created on any PC.
We start by downloadingthe latest 32-bit Debian ISO (at the time I did the install, the latest version was Debian 6 - Squeeze). A small netinst imagewill do the job. Normally we're supposed to burn this image on a CD-ROM and bootthe machine from it. Since the EeePC does not have an embedded CDplayer, and we would need to hook an external one via USB port, weproceed differently. UNetbootinis a tool that allows you to create a bootable USB disk or SD Cardfrom any ISO image. It can even automatically prepare the USB orSD device with your preferred recent Linux distro. As the EeePC comes with a handy SD Card reader, we make a SD Cardwith the Debian installation ISO, and we boot the machine from it.(Press ESC during the BIOS sequence to select the media to bootfrom.)
A GRUB Error 2 means that the disk is not recognized. Wetherefore download the boot-repair-diskISO, a nice utility to repair a corrupted bootloader. We burn the ISO on a SD card via UNetbootin (the same SD that weused for the Debian install will work fine) and we boot themachine from there. The utility requires very little interventionfrom the user. Once it finishes its work, we remove theboot-repair-disk SD and reboot the machine.
Notice how GRUB correctly identifies the recovery partition. Therefore, to restore a factory image of the WinXP OS on /dev/sda1,instead of pressing F9 during the POST (as described in the EeePCmanual) we could also boot on /dev/sda3 from GRUB.
The machine downloads and installs all the necessary packages. This will take a while, but the process requires very littleintervention on our part. We will be asked now and then whether we want to overwrite ourmodifications to the system; for instance, to etc/sudoersor GRUB. In this case it's safe to keep the default choice of notinstalling the maintainer's version but keeping the local versioncurrently installed, otherwise we will lose our customizations.
Thank you for your worthy work.I have got Eee pc 1000H in Sweden. It means that windows is Swedish! I wonder if I can substitute its Swedish windows with an English windows during process of making this recovery USB memory. Could you please give me some information about it.
Your suggestion is really brilliant, used it yesterday and works great. Thanks you so much!Just one question, is there a way that the files from the D drive(2nd partition) will not be deleted when doing the recovery? I saved all my files from the D drive before assuming that if in case my OS will be corrupted i will still have my files intact.
Thank you for the greatest guide. I just wanted to ask before trying this. Well the original partition table of Asus 1000H is divided by 2 partitions. What if I try to use this recovery way on a straight 160 GB of hard drive without any partition? Will it work?
Hello, I have followed the steps written above, however I encountered a problem in the recovery process. After clicking the destination drive 1, it showed the destination details so I just clicked OK, but I got this error message:
This article is great! All i need now the is the original ASUS 1000H XP Support DVD whci seems to be misplaced. It be great if you could let me know where i could buy/download the required files from, Many thanks and great article!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks a lot for this tutorial. It worked great in my 1002HA after I messed up the MBR while trying to reinstall both XP and Ubuntu. However, I changed the image that got loaded by GHOST to the ENVIR.GHO file. This way I was able to restore all the partitions in the disk, including the recovery partition itself! However (again), the ghost recovery images need then to be copied to the recovery partition manually, but this can be done very easily in a Ubuntu live session via USB. 1e1e36bf2d
